Stump Grinding in Tampa, FL

Hyde Park, Palma Ceia, and Seminole Heights sit under a mature canopy of live and laurel oaks on lots that are often narrow and fenced, while newer streets to the north carry younger trees.

Stump grinding for Tampa properties

Many of Tampa's established neighborhoods date to the early 20th century, and so do some of their trees. Streets in Hyde Park, Palma Ceia, Seminole Heights, and Davis Islands sit under live oaks and laurel oaks with decades of spread, and when one comes down it leaves a wide, dense stump with roots reaching toward the house, the sidewalk, or the driveway.

Laurel oaks are a big part of that canopy. They grow fast but are relatively short-lived, often declining after 50 years or so, and they're prone to rotting from the inside. Add the trees brought down by Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024, and plenty of Tampa yards have a stump left where a tree used to stand.

We quote most jobs from photos, so there's usually no need to wait around for a site visit — send a few pictures of the stump (or stumps) and we'll follow up with a clear estimate, typically within 2 business hours.

What to know before grinding in Tampa

  • Narrow lots and side gates

Many South Tampa and Seminole Heights lots are narrow, so the side gate is usually the only way into the backyard. Measure yours at its narrowest point; our main grinder needs 38 inches of clear opening.

  • Roots under sidewalks and slabs

In the older neighborhoods, oak roots often run beneath sidewalks and driveways. Grinding them back is part of our root grinding service, but concrete that has already heaved needs its own repair afterward.

  • Street parking

Many older Tampa streets are narrow, some still brick, with cars parked along both sides. Let us know where the truck can pull up close to your gate.

Tampa questions

Stump grinding in Tampa: questions and answers

A storm took my tree down. Can you grind what's left?

Yes, once the trunk and branches have been cleared away. We don't cut down or haul off trees, so a tree service handles that part first. After that, send us a photo of the stump and we'll quote it like any other.

Is it worth grinding a laurel oak stump that's already rotting?

Yes. A decaying stump can take years to break down on its own and is a tripping and mowing hazard in the meantime. Grinding takes it below grade in one visit. When you measure it, go across the outside of the base, not the hollow center.
